Do you need a guide to trek in Nepal in 2026?

Yes. Since 1 April 2023 every foreign trekker entering a national park, conservation area or restricted area in Nepal must walk with a licensed guide, and it is checked at trail checkpoints. Day hikes around Kathmandu and Pokhara that stay outside those zones are exempt. I hold Nepal Government trekking guide licence #10730 and mountain guide licence #10589.

How much does a trekking guide cost per day in Nepal?

A licensed trekking guide in Nepal is roughly USD 25–40 per day, and a climbing guide for a 6,000 m peak roughly USD 50–70 per day. The rate moves with the region, the season and the size of your group. Booking me directly means you pay the guide rather than an agency markup on top — tell me your route and I will send an itemised quote.

Is solo trekking banned in Nepal?

Not exactly. You can still travel as a single trekker — you simply cannot walk unaccompanied inside the permit zones. Since March 2026 a solo foreigner can also obtain a Manaslu restricted-area permit without a second trekker, provided a licensed guide walks with them.

What permits do I need for trekking in Nepal?

Everest needs a Sagarmatha National Park permit plus the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality fee. Annapurna needs ACAP. Langtang needs the Langtang National Park permit. Manaslu needs a restricted-area permit plus MCAP and ACAP. Peak climbing adds an NMA climbing permit. I arrange all of them before you land in Kathmandu.

When is the best time to trek in Nepal?

March to May and September to November are the two prime windows — stable weather, clear mountain views and warm teahouses. December to February is cold but very quiet at lower altitudes. Book three to eight weeks ahead in peak season to secure Lukla flights and lodges.

How do I check that a Nepal trekking guide is licensed?

Ask to see the physical licence card and number issued by the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management, and check the photo and name against the person in front of you. Mine are #10730 for trekking and #10589 for mountain guiding. You are entitled to see a guide's licence before paying anything.

What is included when I guide your trek?

Route planning, every permit and the paperwork behind it, porter arrangement, teahouse bookings, daily altitude checks and honest local advice on the trail. International flights, travel insurance and personal gear are separate — I advise on all three before you book.

Is Nepal safe for solo female trekkers?

Yes. A large share of the trekkers I guide are women travelling alone. The main trails are busy and teahouse culture is welcoming. I can arrange a female porter-guide on request, and I share my full licence details and the planned route with your family before we leave.

What is the difference between a guide and a porter in Nepal?

A guide navigates, handles permits and checkpoints, watches for altitude sickness and translates between you and the mountain villages. A porter carries your main pack, usually up to 20–25 kg shared between two trekkers. Many trekkers hire both; a porter-guide does a lighter version of each role.

Do you guide beginners and first-time trekkers?

Yes. Mardi Himal, Poon Hill and the Langtang Valley are excellent first treks in Nepal. I set pace and altitude gain around your fitness rather than a fixed schedule, so nobody is rushed through the acclimatisation days.
